Lernabl beyond exam season:

a year-round approach to exam preparation

Exam preparation involves more than setting aside time to revise. Learners need to organise their materials, identify what matters, recognise gaps in their understanding and decide where to focus their attention. When these tasks are left until the weeks before an assessment, they can create a substantial additional workload.

By using Lernabl from week one of the academic year, learners develop a familiar routine and build useful study materials as their course or training progresses.

Lernabl’s Create Topic Cards from files feature supports this approach by turning uploaded resources into structured Topic Cards. Used regularly, it can help connect weekly learning with more thorough preparation for future assessments.

Turning weekly resources into usable study materials

A learner may finish each week with lecture slides, typed notes, handouts or training documents spread across several files. Having access to those resources does not necessarily mean they are ready to revise from them. Identifying topics and organising the information can itself be a barrier to getting started.

Lernabl allows users to upload study resources and generate Topic Cards containing key terms, definitions and study notes. This provides an initial structure that learners can review and personalise, helping them move from collecting information towards working with it.

How the upload files feature works

  1. Within an exam’s Topic Cards area, users select Create Topic Cards from files and upload files such as PDFs, Word documents or slides.

  2. Lernabl will then analyse the files & suggests topics based on the uploaded content. Users choose which suggestions to turn into Topic Cards and select their preferred level of detail.

  3. Lernabl then creates the cards, which users can check and edit. Topics can be added or removed later, and further personalised with additional study notes, images and web links.

Why regular use matters

The value of this feature extends beyond creating revision materials. Used as part of a weekly routine, it gives learners repeated opportunities to engage with the content while the teaching or training is still recent.

Regular use can also spread the work of preparing study materials across the year. Instead of facing a large collection of unfamiliar files at the start of revision, the learner has a developing set of resources they have already checked and revisited.

For someone who finds planning, task initiation or organising information difficult, a repeatable sequence (upload, review, personalise and revisit) can provide a clearer starting point. Topic Rating stars can also be used to record perceived confidence and prompt reflection about where further work may be needed.

Supporting active engagement and independence

Generated cards are most useful when learners take an active role in reviewing them. Checking the content against the original resources, adding examples and rewriting explanations in their own words can all form part of the learning process.

As assessments approach, the cards can be checked against learning outcomes or assessment guidance and used alongside practice questions. This helps keep preparation connected to both the course content and the ability to apply it.
